  • Tourne à gauche… A GAUCHE!

    Défi : utiliser un vélo qui tourne à droite quand on tourne le guidon à gauche et inversement.

    Problème : une fois ce vélo maîtrisé (longtemps après), le cerveau s’est corrigé et a modifié complètement les réflexes de l’utilisateur.
    Et le vélo : ça ne s’oublie pas.

    Vendredi dernier, j’ai essayé d’observer la fameuse éclipse mais le ciel gris parisien a gâché ce moment et la récréation de nombreuses écoles primaires qui ont dût les organiser en intérieur. Par contre, sur les îles Féroe, le groupe de Doom Metal Hamferð a profité de la très bonne visibilité du phénomène pour tourner son clip du titre Deyðir Varðar, tourné en une seule prise bénéficiant de cette ambiance si particulière

On Tuesday, the general assembly adopted a resolution that underscores the right to privacy and condemns unlawful mass surveillance in the name of security, calling it a violation of human rights.

    The resolution calls illegal or arbitrary watching, listening, and collecting of online chats and cell phone usage highly intrusive, saying it can interfere with the right to freedom of expression and may contradict the tenets of a democratic society, including when done on a mass scale.

    Peut on enseigner la biologie sans parler d’évolution?

    Hmmmmmmmmm non.

    It’s irresponsible to teach biology without evolution, and yet many students worry about reconciling their beliefs with evolutionary science. Just as many Americans don’t grasp the fact that evolution is not merely a « theory, » but the underpinning of all biological science, a substantial minority of my students are troubled to discover that their beliefs conflict with the course material.

    Until recently, I had pretty much ignored such discomfort, assuming that it was their problem, not mine. Teaching biology without evolution would be like teaching chemistry without molecules, or physics without mass and energy. But instead of students’ growing more comfortable with the tension between evolution and religion over time, the opposite seems to have happened. Thus, The Talk.

    Les 3 lois de la robotique d’Asimov ont forgé tout un pan de la culture robotique et de la science-fiction. Simples, logiques, elle sont pourtant absentes de la pléthore de robots qui nous entourent actuellement pour qui le concept de protection ou même de vie humaine sont inexistants.

    Voici un premier essai pour combler ce manque et qui explore les décisions que devront prendre les robots (voitures) de demain : qui dois-je sauver et comment?

    Photographer Dillon Marsh, whom we have featured earlier, returns with an intriguing photo series that explores the “price” of extracting precious metals and stones from South Africa’s numerous mines.

    In his series ‘For What It’s Worth’, Marsh attempted to visualize the amount of copper and diamonds that lay hidden in the mines.

    To give a stark visualization of the amount of copper present in the mines, Marsh added computer-generated spheres to his photos.

    In contrast, photos that reveal the amount of diamonds present in the mine are almost hidden from sight—its representation is dwarfed by the large holes that were created during the extraction process.
